How often does a backflow preventer need to be inspected?

A backflow preventer should be inspected and tested once a year in most areas. Utility rules drive the schedule because yearly certification is the standard way to protect drinking water from contamination.

Actual frequency can vary by device type and hazard level, and your local water provider may send reminders or require specific forms from a licensed tester. One thing we see often is irrigation RPZ valves sitting low in the landscape; sand and mulch can gum up the checks in a single season. In our Central Florida service area, utilities typically expect a documented annual test of irrigation and potable-water assemblies.

Schedule an extra test if you notice any of the following:

  • New installation or the assembly was moved
  • Any repair to the device or a major pressure event on the line
  • Continuous dripping or discharge from the relief port
  • Unusual odor, taste, or discoloration at fixtures served by that line

If you suspect contamination, avoid using the water until a certified test confirms it is safe.
